Unsichtbare Berater*innen, Meinungsforscher*innen und Informatiker*innen politischer Parteien manipulieren unser Bewusstsein und erzeugen mithilfe sozialer Medien neue Feindbilder. Soziale Medien eignen sich ideal zum Durchforsten von Nutzer*innendaten und zur gezielten, individuell ausgerichteten Verbreitung von Falschinformationen. Eine statistische Erhebung eines anerkannten Meinungsforschungsinstituts aus dem Jahr 2020 beziffert den Anteil von Fake News in sozialen Medien, bezogen auf politische Inhalte, mit 82 Prozent. Die Auswertung bezieht sich auf alle sozialen Plattformen weltweit, deren tägliches User*innen-Aufkommen 200 Millionen übersteigt. In der gezeigten Installation werden diese statistischen Zahlen mithilfe von Wolken visualisiert. Die Größenverhältnisse der beiden Wolken entsprechen den Anteilen von Fake News zu verifizierten Fakten. Die Objekte aus Watte bewegen sich über eine mechanische Vorrichtung am oberen, im Ausstellungsbetrieb meist ungenutzten Teil des Raumes entlang. Die Arbeit nutzt in konzeptueller Weise die Methoden politischer Desinformation und legt Funktionsweisen globaler Meinungsbildung offen. Mithilfe einer fiktiven Statistik regt Alfred Lenz dazu an, den Wahrheitsgehalt der von uns konsumierten Medien zu hinterfragen.
21.02.2022 Am Vorabend der russischen Truppenbewegung, die zur Invasion der Ukraine führte, brach das Drahtseil der großen Wolke und sie stürzte zu Boden. Während in der Ukraine die Situation weiter eskaliert, setzt Russland Falschmeldungen taktisch ein, um den Gegner zu zermürben und die Zivilbevölkerung zu desinformieren oder mithilfe von Propaganda zu manipulieren. Regimekritische Nachrichten werden in Russland zensiert oder müssen mit Sendeverboten rechnen. Soziale Netzwerke werden blockiert, um den Informationsaustausch mit dem Westen zu unterdrücken. Desinformation wird als Kriegswaffe eingesetzt und erhält in einer medienorientierten Welt eine neue Dimension.
In Anbetracht dieser unerträglichen Situation wurde entschieden, die herabgestürzte Wolke – die symbolisch für Fehlinformation steht – in ihrem Zustand zu belassen. Die zweite, kleinere Wolke symbolisiert die Wahrheit. Sie ist nach wie vor in Betrieb und zieht unermüdlich ihre Kreise.

Invisible consultants, pollsters and political party computer scientists manipulate our consciousness, creating new bogeymen with the help of social media. Social media are ideally suited for mining user data and the deliberate, individually targeted dissemination of false information. A statistical survey by an approved opinion institute from 2020 puts the proportion of fake news in social media, in relation to political content, at 82 percent. The analysis refers to all social platforms worldwide whose daily user volume exceeds 200 million. In this installation, these statistical figures are visualized with the help of clouds. The proportions of the two clouds to one another correspond to those of fake news to verified facts. The objects made of cotton wool move along a mechanical device on the upper part of the room, which is mostly unused in exhibitions. The work deploys the methods of political disinformation in a conceptual way, exposing the workings whereby global opinion is formed. With the help of invented statistics, Alfred Lenz prompts us to question the truthfulness of the media we consume.
21.02.2022 On the eve of the Russian troop movement leading to the invasion of Ukraine, the wire cable of the large cloud broke and crashed to the floor. While the situation in Ukraine continues to escalate, false reports are being employed by Russia for tactical purposes to demoralise the enemy and to disinform the civilian population, or manipulate it by means of propaganda. News in Russia critical of the regime is censored or can expect broadcasting bans. Social media are blocked so as to suppress any exchange of information with the west. Disinformation is deployed as a weapon and acquires a new dimension in a media-driven world.
In view of the unbearable situation, it was decided to leave the collapsed cloud—symbolising false information—in its present state. The second, smaller cloud symbolises truth. This cloud is still working, still circling tirelessly.
